Do you have a growing boy ready to move out of the shared bedroom with his younger brother and start anew in his own sanctuary?

You can’t wait to get started and you’re itching to buy those paints with the in colors of the season and start painting. You want to strip down the wall hangings and window treatments in the living room right now!

With the spare room, have you chosen to decorate it into a formal study or a second guestroom?

All good projects to consider, and the enthusiasm is high to get the work started. But before you run out and buy paint, do you really know what you are about to do? With keys in hand it occurs to you that you do not have a clue as to how go about completely remodeling a room. Time to sit down, take a deep breath, and think this through a little further.

Many home decorating projects don’t turn out as expected because of lack of planning. Therefore, the first and most important thing is to have a plan. Sometimes the urge to start right ahead and paint the walls can get overwhelming. But this can lead to a big decorating misfortune. Take a step back and survey the room. Consider all the elements – furniture, color, decors, etc. What should be kept and what should go? What needs some thorough cleaning and polishing? What repair work needs to be done? Ask yourself key questions before changing anything.

Get a notebook and begin to write. Get a tape measure, write down the dimensions of the room, measure the furniture pieces to be kept. Sketch in the new closet, pencil in the new window. (There are software packages on the Internet that will let you design and redesign the room. You can get graph paper and paste on cut-to-scale silhouettes of furnishings on to the drawn-to-scale outline of the room. Then move the silhouettes around trying different positions and locations.)

Choose a theme. This is especially applicable if you’re planning to have a different design idea. You’ll be able to figure out the decorations and furnishings you need with a theme in mind. If on the other hand, you’ll stick to the same theme as you have now, consider the decors that you still need to buy as further accents to your home.

As you consider the possible decors and things you want to buy, it’s time to do some cost estimates. A list will help because you can track the difference in rates and how they compare to your allotted budget. Check out not just the real stores and major outlets but as well as online stores and auction websites. If your network is impressive, you can also ask around whose selling any home decors and such. Visit garage sales and flea markets for more options.

As everything falls into place, you can now start looking for contractors, repair person, designer and the like. Ask friends for recommendations and do research as well for credible service professionals. The more prepared you are, the more you’ll know your stuff, the more you’ll be able to direct the people helping you out to achieve your desired results. Your home’s decorating project can be called successful.
